Holiday Light Display Benefiting Autism Awareness

On December 4th, the Christmas Castle display is back and will be celebrating its 25th year. For those of you which enjoy light displays or have small children that do, The Hannah's, one of our neighbors in Devon-Aire Estates, transform their home every year into a castle that puts on a spectacular light show they call the Christmas Castle and do so for Autism Awareness. This is a light display with more than 50,000 lights which are synchronized to holiday music and Disney inspired castle which is 38 ft high. They occasionally have characters at the display and last year they even had some from the movie Frozen. They also put out a fireworks show (weather permitting) on some nights at the end of the show. Folks living on 123rd Place have undoubtedly heard the music playing daily and occasional fireworks. The lights run from Sunday - Thursday from 6PM - 10PM and Friday - Saturday 6PM - 11PM and will run through December 27th. Donations benefiting autism awareness through the Dan Marino Autism Foundation can be made while there. The display is located at 12331 SW 109th Ter which is a short walk from Devon-Aire Villas #1 West through the 106th Street exit. It can get quite crowded so if you can walk there, please do as there is very little parking. You can visit their web site by going to: http://www.christmascastle.us. If you are unable to go there to see it for yourself, there are some videos posted by the Hannah's for you to enjoy on their website.

Drug Bust: Devon-Aire Villas #1 West 11/5/2015

Early this morning MDPD served a warrant on a tenant living at a home located on the corner of SW 122nd PL & SW 109 LN.  They arrested the suspect once they arrived and found a marijuana grow room in their unit.  You can read more about the incident by Clicking Here.  The incident caused members living at that location all kinds of headaches trying to get to and from their homes.  This is the third such incident in our community in the last 5 years.  The Board of Directors has been reviewing options for the last few months due to incidents such as these to try and mitigate these problems in the future.  We hope to have some kind of workable policy sometime next year.  In the mean time, please be on the lookout for units which display the following behavior:
  • Homes with a lot of guest traffic during the day and night for stays lasting only a few minutes.
  • Blinds, shutters or other material on windows to block light.
  • Finding drugs or drug paraphernalia in the area.
  • Visible and repeated exchanges of items in the open including exchanges of money.
  • Musty or other foul odors coming from a home.
If you suspect a unit may be engaging in illegal activity, please do not ignore it.  Please call Miami Dade Police at (305) 476-5423 and let them investigate.  By being proactive you can help the community prevent others crimes which inevitably follows this type of unwanted activity.

Correction: November 6, 2015
The original article incorrectly placed the incident at the corner of "SW 122nd Ter & SW 109 LN" and has been updated in this story to reflect the correct location.

Villa of the Quarter: September 2015

The Board of Directors recognizes members who go above and beyond in the upkeep of their villa within our community. These members are examples of the potential each home has when it is well maintained and also helps keep property values high which benefits everyone in the community. The third quarter nominations for the Villa of the Quarter award were submitted by members of the Board and later voted on in September.

Back to School Update: SW 122 Ave Construction

On Thursday, August 20th, we received a call from Lubby Navarro, the District 7 School Board Member, to update us on the concern brought to her attention at our last Board Meeting regarding the drainage improvement construction project currently underway at SW 122nd Ave, right in front of Devon-Aire K8 Center.  She visited the site and was not happy with what she saw.  The information she had on hand regarding the project showed that the project was scheduled for completion in October, however due to safety concerns, she began contacting the District 8 County Commissioner's office and the Public Works manager responsible for the project to try and stop the project currently underway.  After speaking with them, she was able to have the project halted and said she received assurances that the roads would be clear by Sunday afternoon and that she would check on the progress of that cleanup on Saturday.  We are happy to say, that the roads are now clear and the roads are ready for the Monday morning back to school traffic rush. Although the project has been postponed for now, at least it will not impact residents and hope that the remainder of the project is more thoughtfully planned out to take school traffic into account when they eventually resume.

Folks who travel down SW 122nd Ave towards Killian, either to get to work or to drop their kids off at school, should still plan to leave a little earlier to avoid traffic.  Lubby Navarro said that there would be a police presence at the school to monitor traffic and that she would try to be present on the first day of school.  We would like to thank Lubby Navarro for the all the effort she put into addressing our community's concerns.

Back to School

Public Schools are set to begin in just a couple of weeks and undoubtedly residents living in the community will have noticed the inopportune timing of road construction on 122nd Ave, right in front of Devon-Aire K8 center.  With school set to begin on 24th of August, it certainly does not seem possible that construction will be completed before the start of school, therefore residents should plan to leave a little earlier if they plan to get to work on time.  The increased traffic usually seen during the first week of school will undoubtedly be worse than previous years and may adversely affect those attempting to exit via 122nd Ave.

During the 8/6/2015 Board of Directors meeting, Lubby Navarro, the District 7 School Board Member, spoke to homeowners that were present.  She touched upon the current fiscal issues affecting the school district, new programs being implemented by Miami Dade County Schools and answered the questions and concerns of those present.  Her presentation brought up issues that many residents were not aware of and was very informative.  Members of the board did bring up the current construction concern and she promised to look into the matter to see if there was anyway to ensure that traffic does not become snarled or become dangerous for those trying to drop of their children at school in the morning.  We wish to thank Lubby Navarro for taking the time to meet with our community's residents.

Car Break-In/Theft: Villas West 8/2/2015

Car break-ins/thefts where reported by at least 5 homeowners living on SW 111th LN.  The events occurred on the night of 8/2/2015.  In all instances, it seems that the owners did not have their cars locked.  The individual(s) responsible for these thefts rummaged through the cars glove compartments and other spaces and took random items of little or no value except in one case where a gas card was taken and used later the next day.

Don't become a victim.  Homeowners are asked that they check their cars are locked and ensure that items of value are not left in their cars before turning in for the night. The individuals responsible are looking for easy targets.  Although some of the stolen items seem inconsequential, there is a possibility that the some of the items taken could be used to commit identity theft.  If you were a car theft victim, please take the time to file a police report.  We know that calling police to file report can be time consuming, however Miami Dade County Police now allow you to file a report for certain types of crimes online.  Click Here if you need to file a police report.  If a report is not filed, there is no way that police can establish trends to help mitigate these types of crimes.

Please speak with your neighbors to pass on this information as some folks do not have access to email or internet and would otherwise never know that activity is occurring. Please be sure to also let us know once you have reported an incident to Police so we can spread the word to other residents.

It goes without saying that if suspicious activity is occurring on or around the property, residents are urged to please contact Police immediately by calling their non emergency number at (305) 4-POLICE (476-5423).  If you believe that a crime is in progress, please call 911.  Do not attempt contact with any person engaging in suspicious activity and instead let Police handle the situation.

Nextdoor: Community Social Network

Members from the Board of Directors regularly attend Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) meetings and have done so for the last couple of years.  Issues affecting our community are addressed in that forum such as crime, suspected criminal activity, graffiti, traffic issues, etc... We bring up any issues that affect our community in those meetings.  Meetings are held each month, on the last Wednesday of every month, and all residents are invited to attend.  Meetings are held at the Miami Dade County Police Kendall Station.

At this month's meeting, Miami Dade County Police introduced a new partnership with a community social network called Nextdoor.  This social network is different than Facebook or Twitter in that it is restricted to residents who live close to one another based on boundaries.  Miami Dade County Police have set up an online presence at Nextdoor to provide county residents with alerts, news of interest to our community, crime trends to be aware of, etc...   That is not all however.  Once you join the network, residents can reach out to their neighbors and post items of interest only members of our community can see.  This is a great way for our 302 members to get to know each other.

At the request of Miami Dade County Police, we have started to set up a community at Nextdoor.com for our Members to join.  Within the next few days, those members that are on our mailing list will receive an email invitation to join the network.  For those that do not wish to wait for that email, you may join by Clicking Here.  We encourage every member of our community to join Nextdoor.  Next door also has an app available at the Google Play Store as well as the iTunes App Store.

For more information about Nextdoor, please watch the following YouTube video:

Follow-up: Crime Watch Meeting: 7/16/2015

We had a good turnout at the July 16th Crime Watch meeting with some 25 homeowners in attendance.  Officer De Leon went over crime stats for our community and surrounding neighborhoods.  The news was good, with crime in our community showing very little activity. There were 8 calls placed by residents who reported people acting suspiciously or individuals in cars acting in a suspicious manner.   Officer De Leon praised those that placed those calls and asked residents to continue to call in ANY suspicious activity.

There were some trends that he wanted to make people aware which are occurring all throughout Miami Dade County.   The first trend he reported was car rim thefts which are up.  The type of car and rims stolen don't really follow a pattern and all cars seems to be targeted.  It doesn't seem to matter if the rims are custom or if they are regular rims that come with your standard model car.  Next was, air bag thefts which are also up.  Lastly, he reported a rise in Apple product thefts.  He stressed that you should not leave them in your car unattended, especially when going to a mall, as thieves may be keeping an eye on you.  If you visit an Apple store to have your Apple device (iPad, iPhone, iTouch, etc) serviced or if you purchase one at the store, do not go back to your car to leave the device there after visiting the store.  Thieves may be watching you.  It goes without saying that you should never leave any valuables in your car unattended.

We thank everyone that was able to attend.  It is only because of those involved that we have been able to keep crime low and it is all due to those who participate in Crime Watch that this is possible.  Crime Watch doesn't work if you only get involved after you have become a victim of a crime.

Update: Villas East 6/4/2015

This is both a followup to the burglary reported 5/21/2015 as well as to report an incident that occurred this evening, 6/4/2015, which could have ended in tragedy.

With regards to the burglary reported on 5/21/2015, we talked to MDPD this week regarding the matter and after they researched the report it turned out the burglary was the result of a domestic dispute. Although still a crime, at least it wasn't the result of some random burglary in the community.

This evening we received a call from a member which had just called 911 to report some juveniles walking through East side common areas, close to Street Circle South, with what appeared to be a weapon of some kind.  Police responded quickly with weapons drawn.  It turns out that the juveniles had a fake gun they were playing with and dropped the toy weapon as soon as Police confronted them.  It is important to note that although the incident turned out to be a false alarm, it could have turned out to be a tragic situation had the juveniles not dropped the toy gun as soon as they were confronted by Police. The incident occurred at dusk which I am sure didn't help matters.  Police met with a member of the Board of Directors who then spoke with the parents of one of the kids involved.  We wish to thank MDPD Officers for their quick response as well as being able to safely address the issue.

With the 2014-2015 school year coming to a close, it is important that parents make sure that they keep tabs on their children's activities during the summer.  Like the incident described above, residents in our community are now more likely to call Police if they see or hear any questionable activity.  Keep your kids safe and ensure that they are not engaging in any activity that can get them into any trouble.

Burglary: Villas East 5/21/2015

A burglary has been reported on CrimeMapping.com for a home located at 12000 BLOCK SW 110TH ST CIR however it did not list what part of the circle so it could be anywhere on East.  We also were not contacted by the tenant of the affected property.  We have contacted MDPD to get more details on the reported burglary.

As a followup to the burglary that occurred in East on 4/1/2015, we were able to make contact with the affected owner to gather some details on the break-in.  The burglar wedged a screwdriver into the front door to gain entry and stole the tenants jewelry.  Nothing else was taken.  No one saw the thief due to some bushes blocking the view of the front door which the tenant has since removed.  It is worth reminding folks that MDPD will provide a free security survey on your home to help you better secure it.  You can find more information regarding that program by Clicking Here.

Recently, there has also been other activity just as concerning which has also been on the East side of the community.  There was one drug related incident which occurred last month on East.  One of our members became suspicious and called Police which were able to apprehend the juveniles responsible.  We have also had someone placing stickers with graffiti on about 20 signs on the East side which we have since had someone remove.  We have been in contact with MDPD regarding these incidents as well, but MDPD can't help if residents don't begin reporting suspicious activity when they see it.  Although a sizable portion of you will receive this message by email, with some others choosing to instead read it right from our blog, there are still many members who do not have internet access who might otherwise not know what is going on.  We are asking all members reading this to please speak with your neighbors to get the word out regarding the issues which have been occurring on East.  If you are renting out your unit, please pass this information on to your tenants.  By getting the word out, we ensure that whoever is responsible will be caught.

Please stay alert for any suspicious activity.  The basic rule of thumb is if you see a possible crime in progress, call 9-1-1.  If you wish to report suspicious activity, please call the non-emergency number at (305) 476-5423.  Please pay particular attention to individuals loitering in the guest parking areas or other parts of the community and if observe anyone circling around the community that should not be there, walking in and around homes or just someone who seems out of place, please contact Police.  Miami Dade Police is now authorized to ask anyone to leave the property that has no business in the community.  After you contact Police, please let us know as well by using our Contact Us page or by calling us at (305) 859-1462 and leaving a message.  Messages left at this number are monitored 7 days a week by all members of the board.

Villa of the Quarter: May 2015

The Board of Directors recognizes members who go above and beyond in the upkeep of their villa within our community.  The second quarter nominations for the Villa of the Quarter award were were submitted by members of the Board and later voted on in April.  The decision between which home to choose was certainly not easy for the Board as all the homes nominated were kept up & landscaped so well.

The home chosen for the 2nd Quarter of 2015 belongs to Alfredo & Moraima Salas who live on 110th Street Circle South and are long time residents of the community.  As residents pass through 110th Street Circle South, they will pass a home with finely manicured lawn and bushes along with beautiful little palm trees.  When speaking with Mr. & Mrs. Salas you can tell how much pride they take in the upkeep of their home.  On April 4th, 2015 the Board President & Vice-President presented the Devon-Aire Villas #1 Villa of The Quarter award in recognition of outstanding landscaping and villa upkeep as well as a $50 Outback gift card to Mr. & Mrs. Salas. The Board of Directors wishes to thank you both for all the hard work you put into you villa! We are proud to have you in the community.

A car break-in/theft was reported on 3/4/2015 on Street Circle East, but the owner did not contact us after filing a police report.  There was also a report of drug or alcohol violation reported at the corner of SW 106th ST & SW 122nd Ave.  Two additional incidents were reported by members.  One member in the community reported suspicious activity on 3/20/2015 at the guest parking on SW 109th LN involving two vehicles that had no business in the community which he promptly reported to police.  The other incident on 3/20/2015 involved a nighttime gathering of young adults which were consuming alcohol on SW 111th LN guest parking and consequently left all of their cans and bottles at guest parking for someone else to pick up.  This was not reported to police at the time that it occurred and instead reported to us after the fact, but it should have been reported to police as it was occurring.

We also ask that you please speak with your neighbors to pass on this information as some folks do not have access to email or the internet and would otherwise never know that activity is occurring.  Please be sure to also let us know once you have reported an incident to Police so we can spread the word to other residents.

Crime Update 3/15/2015

We have noticed a slight uptick in crimes in the area since 2/18/2015.  Although our community has not been affected, we have noticed that there have been 3 burglaries in the other Devon-Aire Villas communities and one home in Devon-Aire Estates for the time period between 2/18/2015 to 3/15/2015.  In total, we noticed a total of 9 incidents which sit real close to our community.

It is real important that we not let our guard down.  Keep your eyes open for anyone looking through cars, going behind homes or strangers at your neighbors home.  If you notice any unusual activity, please report that to police immediately by calling their non emergency number at (305) 4-POLICE (476-5423).  If you believe that it is a crime in progress, please call 911.  Be sure to let us know as well so we can spread the word to other residents.  Do not attempt to engage any suspicious person exhibiting odd behavior and instead let Police handle the situation.  Stay vigilant, but stay safe.

If you would like to reference crime statistics for this area, you can access CrimeMapping.com which will plot out on a map where certain crimes are occurring throughout Miami Dade County.

Recycle Pickup Issues Update 3/3/2015

This weeks scheduled pickup did not occur again as scheduled for our community.  Homeowners affected should leave out their blue containers tonight so they can pickup tomorrow.  If your blue recycle container is overflowing with trash, please dump some of that overflow into the green containers.  This will prevent the overflow from ending up in the street.  We have again called 311 due to the missed recycle pickup.  We know that this issue is frustrating and will again contact our District 8 Commissioner, Daniella Levine Cava and our contact with Public Works about the issue.  The issue seems to also have expanded to some of the homes in Devon-Aire Estates as we have observed rows of blue containers with uncollected trash in them.

Turnpike Construction & Sound Walls

Many of you have already received a mailer from the Turnpike Authority with regards to the express lane project which they currently have in progress.  For those of you that have not, the Turnpike Authority intends to install sound walls along the Turnpike  to reduce traffic generated noise.  Looking at the proposed locations of the sound walls, it does not look like they will impact anyone as they will be built across the canal, away from homes, so construction of these walls should not affect the homes that sit behind the Turnpike on Circle East, Circle South or Circle North.  It should go without saying that those of you who use the Turnpike for their daily commute to work through Kendall drive or via SW 120th Street will be affected by the project as it begins to snarl traffic due to shifting lanes, ramp closures or lane closures.  Work is not scheduled to begin until this spring and will end sometime in 2018.  For more information regarding this project, Click Here.

Vandalism: Devon-Aire Villas #1 Park West

This past Friday we discovered that someone took the time to go to the West side park and hacked down one of the trees that were planted last year to replace the ones lost over time.  They also seemed to have damaged one of the palm trees a little ways past the park close to 109th Lane.  Damages due to vandalism is money out of every member's pocket in the long run and leads to increases in the annual assessment.  Damages total around $600 in the loss of the tree plus replacement costs.  Please help keep those costs down by staying alert and should you witness anyone damaging community property, please let us know right away.

Update: Crime Watch Meeting: 2/19/2015

We would like to thank everyone that attended the Crime Watch meeting today especially considering how cold it was.  The attending officer, Officer Aluart, went over crime statistics for our grid for the time period of 11/1/2014 to 2/12/2015 and over all it wasn't to bad.  Officer Aluart passed out a brochure on how to spot fraud and how to protect yourself.  Should anyone want a copy, please let us know.  He advised those in attendance that there has been a surge in IRS related fraud over the last few months.  The fraud is perpetrated by someone calling your home and then pretending to be an IRS official with the number they are calling from sometimes appearing like originates from Washington, DC or Virginia.  He stated that should you receive such a call to just hang up or don't pick up the call since the IRS would never call you out of the blue.  The IRS has put out a news bulletin about the issue.  Click Here for more information.

Officer Aluart also spoke about an increase in car tire/rim thefts over the last few months.  He stated that the thieves are quick and seem to be targeting 2012 model cars and newer.  He advised residents that want to try and prevent the theft of their tires/rims to buy some wheel locks.  He said he has also seen individuals place more than one wheel lock on their tires to deter theft.  He did say that if you do apply wheel locks, please be sure to hide the keys and not place them anywhere obvious in the car.  Hiding the key with the spare tire or the glove compartment is the first place thieves will start to look.

Officer Aluart closed the meeting by saying that if anyone has a suspicion on possible crime activity to please call (305) 471-TIPS (8477) and report your concern.

Recycle Pickup Issues Update 2/17/2015

This is an update on the recycle issues residents in our community have been experiencing for the last few months.  This weeks scheduled pickup only occurred on the West side of the community.  Pickup for the 162 homes on the East side did not occur as scheduled.  311 was again called due to the missed recycle pickup.  Residents on the East side are asked to please leave out their blue recycle containers only and hopefully pickup will occur tomorrow.  We know that this issue is frustrating but please bear with us as we try to have the issue corrected.  We will again contact our District 8 Commissioner, Daniella Levine Cava and our contact with Public Works to see what else can be done about the issue.

Crime Watch Meeting: 2/19/2015

A Crime Watch meeting has been scheduled for February 19th at 7PM.  It will be held on the East side, main entrance parking lot.   Click Here for location.  We are asking that you make every effort to attend.  It is only because of those involved that we have been able to keep crime to a minimum and it is all due to those who participate in Crime Watch that this is possible.  Crime Watch doesn't work if you only get involved after you have become a victim of a crime.

As always, a Metro Dade Police Officer will be at the meeting to discuss crime trends in our area, statistics, news of interest as well as to answer any questions from attending residents.

Garbage, Recycle & Bulk Waste Pickup

Over the last several months we have been having issues with some homeowners leaving out their green garbage & blue recycle bins out past 7 PM on their scheduled pickup day.  Not including homeowners that have had to recently leave their blue recycle bins out due to non-pickup by the county on its scheduled date, there have been owners that have been leaving their bins out all week long.  Some owners are also placing their bins out in the middle of the road which is presenting an issue for motorists.

We have also been having issues with homeowners placing bulk trash out on the curb and not immediately calling Miami Dade County 3-1-1 for a pickup with some homeowners also leaving appliances with their doors still attached which is illegal.  Appliances left with their doors still attached will not be picked up by the county.  Please remember that you must immediately Contact Us of a bulky waste pickup by providing the 3-1-1 service request number or pickup number.

You can find out more information regarding Trash Pickup days & Bulky Waste pickup by Clicking Here.  There we outline what a homeowner's responsibilities are with regard to garbage collection.

Recycle Pickup Issues

After having received numerous complaints over the last few months regarding missed recycle pickups, some as recent as this Tuesday's Board meeting, we have contacted the office of our District 8 Commissioner, Daniella Levine Cava.  We spoke with one of her representatives and passed on your frustration regarding the issue. When pickups where missed on our regular pickup day, many of you called 311 letting them now that pickup was being missed for all 302 home in our community yet the problem continued to repeat.   The Commissioner's office promised to look into the matter for us and have contacted someone within the Public Works and Waste Management Department.  Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.

Villa of the Quarter: January 2015

The Board of Directors continues in their efforts to recognize members who go above and beyond in the upkeep of their villa.  Nominations for the 1st Quarter of 2015 were submitted by members of the Board and later voted on in December.

The home chosen for the 1st Quarter of 2015 belongs to Mr & Mrs. Jair Restrepo who live on 110th Street Circle East.  Anyone traveling up and down 110th Street Circle East will be hard pressed not to see their home and their
sculpted hedges.  You may catch sight of Jair Restrepo working around his home or his home's landscaping during the week which he is very proud of.  Both of them continue to put in a lot of work into the inside and outside of their home.  On January 3rd, 2015 the Board President & Vice-President presented the Devon-Aire Villas #1 Villa of The Quarter award in recognition of outstanding landscaping and villa upkeep as well as a $50 Publix gift card to Mr. & Mrs. Restrepo.  The Board of Directors wishes to thank you both for all the hard work you put into you villa!  We are proud to have you in the community.
