Nextdoor: Community Social Network

Members from the Board of Directors regularly attend Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) meetings and have done so for the last couple of years.  Issues affecting our community are addressed in that forum such as crime, suspected criminal activity, graffiti, traffic issues, etc... We bring up any issues that affect our community in those meetings.  Meetings are held each month, on the last Wednesday of every month, and all residents are invited to attend.  Meetings are held at the Miami Dade County Police Kendall Station.

At this month's meeting, Miami Dade County Police introduced a new partnership with a community social network called Nextdoor.  This social network is different than Facebook or Twitter in that it is restricted to residents who live close to one another based on boundaries.  Miami Dade County Police have set up an online presence at Nextdoor to provide county residents with alerts, news of interest to our community, crime trends to be aware of, etc...   That is not all however.  Once you join the network, residents can reach out to their neighbors and post items of interest only members of our community can see.  This is a great way for our 302 members to get to know each other.

At the request of Miami Dade County Police, we have started to set up a community at Nextdoor.com for our Members to join.  Within the next few days, those members that are on our mailing list will receive an email invitation to join the network.  For those that do not wish to wait for that email, you may join by Clicking Here.  We encourage every member of our community to join Nextdoor.  Next door also has an app available at the Google Play Store as well as the iTunes App Store.

Follow-up: Crime Watch Meeting: 7/16/2015

We had a good turnout at the July 16th Crime Watch meeting with some 25 homeowners in attendance.  Officer De Leon went over crime stats for our community and surrounding neighborhoods.  The news was good, with crime in our community showing very little activity. There were 8 calls placed by residents who reported people acting suspiciously or individuals in cars acting in a suspicious manner.   Officer De Leon praised those that placed those calls and asked residents to continue to call in ANY suspicious activity.

There were some trends that he wanted to make people aware which are occurring all throughout Miami Dade County.   The first trend he reported was car rim thefts which are up.  The type of car and rims stolen don't really follow a pattern and all cars seems to be targeted.  It doesn't seem to matter if the rims are custom or if they are regular rims that come with your standard model car.  Next was, air bag thefts which are also up.  Lastly, he reported a rise in Apple product thefts.  He stressed that you should not leave them in your car unattended, especially when going to a mall, as thieves may be keeping an eye on you.  If you visit an Apple store to have your Apple device (iPad, iPhone, iTouch, etc) serviced or if you purchase one at the store, do not go back to your car to leave the device there after visiting the store.  Thieves may be watching you.  It goes without saying that you should never leave any valuables in your car unattended.

We thank everyone that was able to attend.  It is only because of those involved that we have been able to keep crime low and it is all due to those who participate in Crime Watch that this is possible.  Crime Watch doesn't work if you only get involved after you have become a victim of a crime.
