Car Hoppers: Villas West 6/24/2026

This is an important reminder to our members and residents in the community to please stay vigilant. The Board of Directors routinely monitors reports of crime in the area for vehicle break-ins and other miscellaneous crime via CrimeMapping.comRing's Neighbors App and Nextdoor

On June 24th, a member of the community reported that there were "car hoppers" on their cul-de-sac. These individuals were rummaging through vehicles that had been left unlocked and stealing whatever they found of value. The member captured video evidence of them searching a neighbor's car. The suspects entered through the 106th Street entrance. The Board President filed a request with the Miami Dade County Sheriff's office, Kendall station to have Sheriff Deputies drive through the community for the next few weeks.

Simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your neighbors:
  • Lock your vehicles — Make it a habit to lock all car doors every time, even at night in your driveway or garage. Car hoppers specifically target unlocked vehicles because they draw less attention and allow for quick thefts.
  • Remove valuables — Never leave items in plain view. Take purses, wallets, electronics, garage remotes, or any other valuables inside with you.
  • Light it up — Leave your front porch lights on throughout the night. With modern LED bulbs, the cost is minimal (just pennies per day) and the deterrent effect is significant.
  • Install cameras — Consider affordable security options like Ring doorbells, Wyze, Blink, Nest, or similar devices. Visible cameras are a strong deterrent and provide valuable evidence if needed.
If you witness suspicious activity:
  • Do not approach or confront anyone. Instead, call the police immediately.
  • For non-emergencies, dial 305-SHERIFF (305-743-7433).
  • If a crime is in progress, call 911.
Always file a police report, no matter how minor the incident seems. Reports help law enforcement identify crime patterns and allow the Board to share timely alerts with the community. After filing, please notify the Board so we can keep everyone informed.
Together, we can maintain the safety and security of Devon-Aire Villas.
